Let me introduce myself....Sonia Ruiz
Welcome to this blog! I created it for the purpose of introducing myself and letting you know why I am running for the position of Southern Vice President for the AFSCME Local 2620 Election. If elected I will also use this blog, email blasts, and face to face interactions to inform the membership of UNION Matters because UNIONS Matter.
I have worked for the state for approximately 19 years and have served as a union steward for the past4 years. I am running for the position of Southern VP because it is one of the executive board positions that guarantees a seat at the negotiation table. We are about to negotiate a new contract and it will be very important to ensure our voices are heard so we can improve wages, benefits, and work conditions for all our members. And most important, I want your feedback about what's important so that I can bring it to the table. Moreover, I firmly believe ALL departments and ALL classifications/disciplines deserve increased wages and improved benefits.
It is my hope that you will have a slate of nominees for every position so that you can choose the best candidate. I would be honored and excited to work with dedicated and passionate individuals on the executive board. We have discussed many ways to improve operations including better communication to members which is a top priority for me. In additional, I would like to schedule quarterly workshops on our contract. Every member should be aware of the contract and its contents whether you are a steward or not. Breaking it down in palpable sections so everyone knows their rights!
Union leadership is in need of new individuals who can infuse the organization with positive energy and new ideas, and most critical for moving forward…regaining the trust of those who have left. It is of the upmost importance to increase our membership as there is power in numbers and that will help us at the negotiation table with the STATE. Reach out to those around you and encourage your co-workers to join!
Lastly, I promise you this, I will work hard for you, I will reach out to all departments and classifications so I can understand your concerns, and I will represent you with honesty and integrity.
